Simplified Assistance for the Elderly

Simplified Assistance for the Elderly (SAFE) Program

Combined Application Projects (CAPs) are demonstration projects forming partnerships between the Social Security Administration, the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), and state food stamp agencies, to improve access to food benefits for seniors with special needs. CAPs simplify the food stamp application process for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who live alone. DCBS has developed the Simplified Assistance for the Elderly (SAFE) Program as Kentucky's version of a CAP.

Benefits For Children With Disabilities

This booklet is for the parents, caregivers or representatives of children under age 18 who have disabilities that might make them eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.

It is also for adults who became disabled in childhood and who might be entitled to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. (We call this SSDI benefit a “child’s” benefit because it is paid on a parent’s Social Security earnings record.)

This booklet will help you decide if your child, or a child you know, might be eligible for Social Security or SSI.

Your Ticket to Work

The Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program is an employment program for people with disabilities who are interested in going to work. The Ticket Program is part of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 – legislation designed to remove many of the barriers that previously influenced people’s decisions about going to work because of the concerns over losing health care coverage. The goal of the Ticket Program is to increase opportunities and choices for Social Security disability beneficiaries to obtain employment, vocational rehabilitation (VR), and other support services from public and private providers, employers, and other organizations.
